Sundays can be a blur for me. Most mornings I wake up early, get out the door to join my church family, and in the blink of an eye it’s 8PM. With all the moving parts on a Sunday morning: getting everyone dressed, fed, and out the door to gather with the church, it’s easy to get a little distracted.
This is one reason we begin each service at City Life Church with a “Call to Worship.” This call is meant to lift our gaze to something greater than our distractions, to a God who cares about our concerns and displaces them with his glorious presence. One way we bring ourselves to behold Christ is by professing truths about the one we worship—by adoring the attributes of our great God. On this record, we wanted a song that does exactly that. So when we found a hymn by Martin Luther called, “We All Believe in the One True God,” we were immediately excited. Based on the Nicene Creed, this hymn calls us to worship by praising the triune God.
We adapted Luther’s hymn in our song, “One True God.” This modern hymn draws attention to the marvelous action of each person of the Trinity in creation and redemption. But it also affirms their unity as our one, true God. Each section closes by praising them together, three-in-one.
One of the things I love about this song is that it not only worships each person of the Trinity but also describes what they do. For example, check out the first verse:
We believe in the one true God, Uncreated, sovereign, free The Father's heart chose us in love He has called us sons and daughters All that's good he does create Every breathe he does sustain Let us give glory to his name He has called us sons and daughters
This beautiful set of lyrics tells us so much about God. The first half proclaims the truth that God created all things out of his sovereign, free will. Nothing constrained him. Creation wasn’t the result of a competition “between the gods.” All things are created and sustained by his power (Genesis 1:1-2; Colossians 1:16; Hebrews 1:3). The second half reminds us this great Creator God takes interest in us: he calls and comforts us, cares and provides for us! What a great God we serve.
As you, your church, or your family, sing through each of these verses, we hope you are brought to stillness and worship in beholding our wonderful Lord. Praise the Father, praise the Son, praise the Spirit, three-in-one!
